Australian Sports Sedans and the Des Wall Trophy
Having the opportunity to compete for the Des Wall trophy in the opening round of the Australian Sports Sedans Championship has to have been one of the most special things I have ever done. To do it in Dad’s #38 Corvette – the car in which he claimed his Championship win – was an opportunity I just could not turn down. It was very, very cool.
Launched at the start of 2013, the Des Wall trophy was established to remember the contribution Des made to Australian motorsport, in particular the Australian Sports Sedans Championship that he won in 2009. It is awarded to the winner of the third and final race of the first round of the Championship each year.
It would not have been possible with support from my amazing partners – all of whom knew Dad well. I have to say a massive thank you to Shannons Insurance, Wilson Security and Payce for making this happen.
I was really looking forward to finally having a chance to drive it! I had not done more than a couple of laps at Mallala to run the diff in for my Dad once, but that was nothing like driving it in anger
As a team, we really enjoyed getting back to Sports Sedans as well. We hadn’t raced with them for a long time. They are definitely the most thrilling cars in the country, but still great fun to race!
Our aim going into the weekend was just to have a good, fun weekend, driving my Dad’s car. We’ve made a few upgrades to the car since Dad passed away, and if we can get our heads around everything we were hoping to be quick enough for a good result.
Dad always said that the car was awesome to drive – and now I know exactly what he meant! These cars are absolutely phenomenal! The whole weekend was such an amazing experience.
Unfortunately we just missed out on the top step, but maybe we have to come back again next year to try again?
